Oslo – the World Winter Capital
For the past 10 years, VisitOSLO has worked with a long-term strategic goal to promote knowledge and interest in Oslo as an attractive winter destination. The term World Winter Captial has been a central theme since the start.
Early on, it was used together with other slogans such as “Capital Cool” and “Great skiing –The World’s best After-ski”. When the Oslo planning committee for the FIS 2011 Nordic World Championships came together to map out a strategic message, World Winter Capital was chosen as a main theme. The Oslo City Council and relevant other partners embraced this message, and it was also the chosen slogan for the 2012 Oslo World Snowboarding Championships.
City marketers always try to highlight some unique attractiveness in their branding, and VisitOSLO believes Oslo can lay claim to the title of World’s Winter Capital. Oslo is the only Capital City to have hosted the Winter Olympic Games. Oslo has hosted several World Championships and world Cup events, and perhaps most importantly; Oslo can offer a complete winter product within the city limits. The Holmenkollen ski jump is a historic site of great importance, the Oslo forest offers ample choice when it comes to cross country skiing, and Oslo Winter Park Tryvann is a full scale alpine/ snow board resort. Add-on activities such as the sledding hill “Korketrekker’n”, ice-skating and Christmas markets add to Oslo’s charm, and to our position as the true Winter Capital of the World.
Finally, it’s important to understand the Norwegian people and our relationship with winter, snow and skiing. It is ingrained in our culture and history, and this mentality was beautifully captured by FIS President Gianfranco Kaspar during the 2011 Nordic World Championships in Oslo when he commented: ”Oslo is the only place in the world where thousands sit down, stare into the fog (…) and thoroughly enjoy themselves.”
