Bjørn Simonsen: Oslo European Green Capital Ambassador

Bjørn Simonsen grew up in a small fjord village on the west coast of Norway. For as long as he can remember, he has always been passionate about nature and fascinated by technology. Currently, this Oslo European Green Capital Ambassador serves as the Vice President for Investor Relations and Corporate Communication at Nel ASA. Nel is a global, dedicated hydrogen company, delivering optimal solutions to produce, store and distribute hydrogen from renewable energy. Working with hydrogen ticks all the boxes of Bjørn’s combined passions- it lets him contribute to a cleaner environment while being able to utilize”really cool” technology.

Below, read more about Bjørn’s commitment to making Oslo a greener city.

What motivates you to help support Oslo to become more environmentally sustainable?

I live in Oslo and want the air we breathe to be as clean as it is in nature. Knowing that it is actually possible to achieve that, and that a lot of people and politicians in Oslo want the same, is extra motivating for me.

Professionally speaking, my company makes electrolyzers which produce hydrogen and oxygen from renewable energy and water, as well as fuelling stations for hydrogen cars, buses, trucks, etc. Hydrogen is a true zero-emission fuel that can replace fossil fuels in all forms of transport. In fact, a hydrogen car is even able to clean surrounding air as it’s driving around – roughly equal to the exhaust of two diesel cars.

What obstacles do you face while working for a greener Oslo?

In order to get hydrogen vehicles on the road, it is necessary to have hydrogen stations at convenient locations throughout the city. At present, there are no hydrogen stations in Oslo.

What are your personal climate goals for 2019?

To use a bike to and from work every day.

Name a role model that inspires you, locally and globally:

One of the people that has inspired me most throughout my life has been Thor Heyerdahl. He did some “impossible” things: dared to go against the status quo and showed a profound respect for nature and diversity, while having fun along the way.
